As the drink of choice in Colonial America, and popular among all social classes, it was not unusual to start one's day with a hot, spicy cup of chocolate. It was perceived to cure common ailments and was even sold in Benjamin Franklin's Philadelphia print shop. Susan McLellan Plaisted, MS RD CSP LDN, will demonstrate the use of the metate by turning the cacao bean into chocolate. Find out what really went into making chocolate from bean to drink, from drink to sweets, and from sweets to the modern candy. Pete Pender Memorial Fishing Derby: Saturday, May 3, 9:00 am: DeMott Pond on Route 173 in Clinton will be stocked with trout for this free family event, and bait, bobbers and hooks will be supplied – just bring your own pole. The event is open to youth under 16 years old. Registration will be held from 8:00 am-9:00 am; fishing is from 9:00 am – 12 noon. Prizes for various categories. Great Hunterdon Rubber Ducky Race: Sunday July 13, 2:00 pm: This event is a real splash and takes place at the South Branch of the Raritan River, at the bridge in Clinton. Ducks will be leaving the starting gate at 2:00 pm RAIN OR SHINE!!! One thousand ducks or more are in training for the big day, and they need YOU to sponsor them! Prizes for the winning sponsors. Flags for Heroes: October 15 - November 15: Flags for Heroes is designed to honor the many heroes in our lives – parents, relatives, friends, veterans, first-responders, teachers, healthcare personnel, essential workers – anyone who has made a positive impact. Each full-size flag will be displayed on a pole and with a medallion including the name of the honoree, and the reason for the honor. The opportunity to enroll your hero will begin in September.
