Ask Officer Raff: Hi Officer Raff, Quick question about rules of the road, from my daughter, who is a new driver… what should she do when another driver waves her on? For example, making a left turn on to a two-lane road or pulling out into traffic? It seems rude not to go when another driver is waving her on… Sincerely, Worried About Right Of Way Dear Worried, Random drivers cannot grant you the right of way. While it is certainly nice for another motorist to try and help your daughter in a time when her visibility may be limited, she should know that it is ultimately her responsibility to make sure a turn can be made safely before proceeding. We've seen numerous avoidable crashes in which one motorist stated that another polite driver waved them into the path of a third vehicle – essentially causing or almost causing a crash. While it may not have been their intent, the "overly polite" motorist created a dangerous situation for everyone involved.
