Dear Ladies, As I sit composing this newsletter (in late July) I am counting the days to September and our line-up of events for the coming season! For me, Fall begins the day after Labor Day. All the Summer whites get laundered and put away and I find myself looking longingly at my boots and sweaters. Fall decorations will have been in the stores for weeks and the scent of Pumpkin Spice is everywhere! So lovely to witness this beautiful transition. Autumn is surely the most seductive of seasons... Fall 2024 at Women's Forum starts like this ~ On Thursday, September 8 we will be heading to Manhattan to the Upper West Side. There are several interesting museums to consider – Museum of Natural History, The NY Historical Society, the American Folk Art Museum – as well as the park and Amsterdam and Columbus avenues with shopping and lots of restaurants. Fingers crossed for good weather! But even if it's beastly hot or rainy, these museums are diverse and a refreshing change from our usual stomping grounds... ~ The American Museum of Natural History has recently opened a new wing - The Gilder Center for Science, Education and Innovation which includes "new exhibition galleries, unique experiences, a Canyon-like atrium five stories tall, a Butterfly vivarium...". And cafes and a full table service restaurant. ~ The NY Historical Society has a variety of exhibits of NYC related art from prominent collectors, an exhibit titled Enchanting Imagination, The Objets d'Art of Andre Chervin and Carvin French Jewelers, a gallery of Tiffany lamps, and an installation titled Women's Voices. Dining options are available. ~ The American Folk Art Museum - located in the Lincoln Center complex (you might have to jump into a cab) is "Candid, genuine, and unexpected. We are NY's only museum dedicated to folk and self-taught artists. Our collection includes more than seven thousand works of art from compelling portraits and dazzling quilts to powerful works by living artists in a variety of mediums." As for dining options, Trip advisor tells us that the area is replete with great restaurants and lists their top ten at www.tripadvisor.com. Settling back into our luncheon routine, the second September event, 9/26, is dedicated to a national favorite - Charlie Brown, or better stated, Charles Schulz, his creator. In a documentary we'll experience an interesting study of a complex and brilliantly talented man who poured his heart into a "strip" that would become an American icon and generate astounding wealth to this day (24 years after his passing). Still being published (no new "strips"– only the originals are reprinted) and their relevance is outstanding. There were several kind letters of encouragement, but only two sign-ups for the panel. I was probably guilty of bad timing, sending out the request at the height of the Summer, when many of you are/were on vacation. As you can see, I'm running the topic anyway, right now with two participants for the panel. But, I know, from conversations with many of you, that your insights and backgrounds would add another valuable dimension to our panel. So I'll try again: If you've had any professional background in psychology for adults or children or in the field of education, or sports, or the arts, or health regarding children, please consider joining our panel for a discussion of Charles Schulz and his comic strip Peanuts and the significance of this American icon. (Especially now, when the concept of childhood innocence is in danger of becoming obsolete.) If it looks like they may qualify, their data is forwarded on for enrollment.
