Diabetic nerve pain of the feet is also known as painful diabetic
peripheral neuropathy. It occurs if the nerves are damaged as a result
of diabetes. There are many diabetics that just have numbness or tingling in
their feet. This numbness can get worse and cause burning and shooting pain
in both feet, and can also cause patients to have difficulty sleeping. There's
no cure for the diabetic neuropathy, and there are numerous treatments
including oral medications, topical pain relief creams which only help with
the symptoms of the severe pain.
However, there is a new in office thirty-minute, topical
treatment called Qutenza which can help quiet the nerves and
can be performed by your podiatrist. Qutenza are impregnated sheets
with 8% Capsaicin. This medication is similar to pepper spray but is at a
much higher concentration. These specialized sheets are applied to your
feet once every three months for thirty minutes each time. Some patients
can see improvement after just one treatment, and many patients can get
complete relief of pain with this new cutting-edge treatment. This treatment
is for diabetics with severe burning and shooting pain. Most insurances and
Medicare will fully cover Qutenza treatments. Prior authorizations will be
performed.
