Clinton Area Stage Troupe ( C A S T ) w i l l p r e s e n t t h e Rodgers & Hammerstein's classic musical, Carousel, on July 24, 25, and 26 at 7:00 p.m. and on July 27 at 2:00 p.m. in the North Hunterdon High School theater. With book and lyrics by Oscar Hammerstein I I a n d m u s i c b y R i c h a r d Rodgers, Carousel first appeared on Broadway in 1945. Several revivals followed, most recently in 2018. A motion picture version in 1956 starred Gordon Macrae and Shirley Jones. A winner of Tony, Olivier, and Drama Desk Awards, Carousel is known for its outstanding orchestral score. The musical is based on the 1909 play Liliom by Hungarian playwright Ferenc Molnar, as adapted by Benjamin F. Glazer. A tale of hope, redemption, and the power of love, Carousel is set in a coastal Maine village in the late 19th century. A swaggering carnival barker, Billy Bigelow, played by Bruce Cargill of Annandale, marries a gentle mill girl, Julie Jordan (Faith Brown of Freemansburg, PA). Later, unemployed and unable to support his pregnant wife, Billy is coerced by an unscrupulous sailor, Jigger Craigin (Tom Farber of High Bridge) into assisting in a robbery. Billy is caught and dies in the attempted crime. In the afterlife, he is offered a chance to redeem himself by one good earthly act. He chooses a day fifteen years later, when his teenage daughter, Louise (Hope Kiehl of Bloomsbury), is suffering the consequences of her father's poor reputation. The society surrounding Billy and Julie includes her best friend Carrie Pipperidge (Megan Joyce Fisher of Clinton Township and Lucinda Fisher Alvarez of Stockton), Carrie's fiancé, the upright and proper Enoch Snow (Andy Kapetanakis of Asbury), Julie's aunt Nettie (Alejandra Garrido of Califon), mill owner David Bascombe (Bill LePore of Phillipsburg), carnival worker Mrs. Mullin (Meg Adam Slutter of Lebanon), a policeman (Steve Slutter of Lebanon), a ship's captain (Jerry Cahill of Hampton), a school principal (James J. Knight of Milford), and three angels (Ed Winnick of Flemington, James Van Patten of Milford, and Olivia LePore of Phillipsburg). The Snow family's many children are played by Ryan Apgar, Christian Shebchuk, Kira Finnegan, Averie Brosnan, Karenna Gutierrez, Gabrielle Lombardo, Eli Mortensen, and Leah Lombardo. A singing and dancing ensemble of carnival characters, sailors, mill workers, and townspeople include Bob Adams, Alex Apgar, Riley Conaty, Dale Dabour, Sue Disko, Jeanne Dunham, Lila Fischer, Margaret Gartlgruber, Kathryn Giles, Lynne Healey, Peggy Ippolito, Jim Knight, Conall McConnachie, Jesse McLaughlin, Laura Mortensen, Megan Povlich, Zachary Rustay, Kathy Snow, and Thomas Zahorchak. The show is directed by Mary Meo and music directed by Kathy Snow and Vincent Angeline. Production assistants are Linda Lauchaire, Diane Lehnert, and Kristeen DeCristofaro. Diane Lehnert serves as stage manager. Tickets, at $15 for adults and $12 for senior citizens (over 65) and children age 11 and younger. Tickets can be ordered on the CAST website: www.ClintonAreaStageTroupe.com/tickets-1. CAST's production of Carousel is by arrangement with Concord Theatricals on behalf of The Rodgers & Hammerstein Organization: www.ConcordTheatricals.com. "One cannot be an American by going about saying that one is an American. It is necessary to feel America, like America, love America, and then work." ~ Georgia O'Keeffe "You cannot separate peace and freedom. Because no one can be at peace unless he has his freedom." ~ Malcolm X
