T h e F l e M i N G T o N B o r o u G h F i r e d e p a r T M e N T N e e d S y o u r h e l p The Flemington Borough Fire Department is a 100% volunteer fire department serving the Borough of Flemington and surrounding areas since 1842. The FBFD is short on volunteers and needs your help. There are several ways you can be part of the Flemington Fire Department: • Firefighter: No prior background/experience/training as a firefighter is needed, and all training and equipment is provided free to you. Most classes are held at night between 7 pm and 11 pm on weekdays with some classes on the weekend. Firefighter 1 has the base training requirements you must meet to become an interior firefighter, it will be up to you if you want to complete more advanced training courses. Members are on call 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. Our station isn't staffed nor do we require duty shifts. Members are alerted by pagers and texts by the County 9-1-1 dispatchers. You're responsible to respond when you are available and to respond in a safe manner, observing all traffic laws. • Fire Police: No prior background/experience/training in directing traffic is needed, and all training and equipment is provided for free. Classes can be one eight-hour day, or a couple hours in the evening. Just like firefighters, you would be on call 24 hours a day, 365 days a year and you would be alerted to calls by pagers and texts by the County 9-1-1 dispatchers. You're responsible to respond in a safe manner, observing all traffic laws. Sometimes you may be called upon to assist with traffic details for parades in town or to assist the police department with traffic control. • Junior Firefighter: Junior firefighters can be between the ages of 16 and 18 with written parent or guardian permission. Junior firefighters, under supervision, can perform basic fire ground duties such as changing Scott-pack cylinders, pulling hose or repacking hose back on the trucks. Junior firefighters can respond to emergency calls until 10:00 pm on school nights and 11:00 pm on weekends or when there is no school in session. They also have to maintain a "C" average in school. They're not allowed to enter a burning structure or assist with hazardous material calls. Junior firefighters will be supervised in the use of all the equipment and will be provided with personal protective envelope (turnout gear) including an orange helmet which designates them as juniors to other firefighters so they are not asked to do a task that might put them in harm's way. • Driver/Pump Operator: You don't need prior background/experience/ training as pump operator. You need to have a valid NJ driver's license and all training is provided for free. You need to attend a Pump Operator class and go through driver training including participation in a Certified Emergency Vehicle Operation (CEVO) course. • Social Auxiliary Member: This is for people who are not interested in the firefighting aspect of volunteering. Social Auxiliary Members would help with fundraisers (flower sales, coin toss, parking cars at 4H fair), social outreach programs (Nights Out, Touch a Truck), parades, building maintenance and helping to supply and serve food and beverages at large or extended fires or hazmat events. People as young as 16 can serve as a Social Auxiliary Member and no special training is required. For those interested in "Old Betsy," our 1928 American LaFrance engine, we would be willing to train you to drive her and do basic maintenance on her so she could be taken to more car shows and other community outreach programs. Persons interested in driving "Old Betsy" would need to be at least 21 with a valid NJ driver's license. As you can see, all tasks involved in belonging to a volunteer fire department are important and without teamwork and dedication on the part of our volunteers our department simply could not function. Besides volunteering and filling a valuable role in the fire department with the benefit of belonging to an organization that prides itself on serving our community with a sense of family, duty, tradition and pride we also offer participation in a Length of Service Awards Program (LOSAP) which is our version of a pension plan that is based on your service to our community. Members have to participate in various functions throughout the year which earns them points. If you reach 100 points, you will receive a stipend that gets put in an account, like a 401K. You can call us at: 908.782.5151 and leave a message where we can send an application, or please stop by (38 Park Ave, Flemington, NJ 08822) and request an application. Our normal meeting and drill nights are Tuesdays and we are always willing to answer questions. "The root of all superstition is that men observe when a thing hits, but not when it misses." ~ Francis Bacon
