It seemed to start with little sports cars, but now it seems all types of vehicles including large SUVs and pickup trucks. Has the regulation changed or is it just not being enforced? – Sincerely, Gerry Hi Gerry, The motor vehicle law in New Jersey governing the display of a front and rear license plate has not changed; in order to be fully compliant, vehicles registered in New Jersey must have a front and rear license plate, mounted within the specifications of Title 39. Any improper display of license plates provides officers with probable cause to stop the vehicle and potentially issue citations for that infraction, as well as any others discovered during the course of the stop. With that being said, there are several factors that may be contributing to the uptick of vehicles with no front plate on our roads. First, most agencies have experienced an increase in the number of calls for service and emergency calls while simultaneously facing difficulties in officer recruiting and retention; we just don't have the staffing levels to enforce many of these minor offenses. Second, during the COVID lockdowns in the major cities, our area saw an influx of new residents from areas where the law was different or just not enforced. Regardless, we encourage everyone to make sure their vehicles meet all the registration, insurance and equipment requirements as proscribed in Title 39, New Jersey Motor Vehicle Statutes. – Safe travels, Officer Raff n Officer Raffaella Vastola grew up locally in Kingwood Township, and has been in law enforcement for almost two decades, serving many of them with CTPD.
