Dear Clinton Township
Community Members,
March is National Reading Month and we
look forward to celebrating literacy across the
district. Building readers and a love of reading is
an important academic focus at Clinton Township
School District. It is important that in the early grades
we help students with phonological awareness, phonemic
awareness, and phonics. This creates a strong foundation
so students can use these skills to break down words by
decoding and build stories by encoding. This process is what
is often referred to as the "Science of Reading". However, once
students can read and write fluently, we focus on building
comprehension and engaging the reader. We call this
approach "Responsive Literacy". As we continue to evolve
as a district, we will also continue to review our practices.
This allows us to move forward in a research-based
way that increases our students' academic successes.
Literacy is the core of a learned society and at CTSD
this is just one aspect of what we do to prepare
our students to be lifelong learners.
– Sincerely, Dr. Melissa Stager, Ed.D,
Superintendent, CTSD
