See you Sunday! d a v i d W i l s o n t o s p e a k a t t h e t e W k s B u r y h i s t o r i c a l s o c i e t y a n n u a l M e e t i n G o n j a n u a r y 2 1 David Wilson will be the guest speaker at the Tewksbury Historical Society Annual Meeting on Sunday, January 21, at the Zion Lutheran Church Christian Education Building, 18 Miller Avenue, Oldwick, 08858, at 1:00 pm. Election of officers and the 2023 Year-End Financial Report will take place. The meeting is open to the public. Refreshments will be served! Wilson will discuss Dr. George Philhower who began his career as teacher of physics in a small schoolhouse in Hunterdon County in the late 1870's and early 1880's. Hiram Deats was one of his students. He went on to NYU Medical School where he earned his Medical Degree in 1886. He moved to Franklin Township where he considered himself a "country doctor". He worked to form and grow the town, which is now known as Nutley Township in Essex County. He was dedicated to improving the quality of life in Nutley, assuming leadership positions at Vincent Methodist Church, Nutley Public Library, Nutley School Board, Parks Commission, Medical Societies, Health Commission, Nutley Memorial Parkway, and Social Clubs. Philhower Road in Tewksbury is named after Dr. Philhower. Wilson began his service career in 1974 joining the Nutley First Aid Squad, becoming an EMT, treasurer, crew chief, training officer, day captain, serving on many committees. He joined the American Red Cross donating blood, volunteering on the Board of Directors, and becoming Chairman of Building and Grounds. In 1985 he joined the Nutley Fire Department as Fire Inspector. His mechanical background from Lincoln Technical Institute, public speaking, financial training, love of people and the need to make the world a better, safer place were put to use. His many fire investigations led to creation of a Burn Avoidance educational program for preschoolers, a Dorm Fire Safety program for college bound seniors, Juvenile Fire Setter Intervention program, and Senior Citizen Fire Safety. He wrote monthly safety and preparedness articles for local papers, radio, and cable shows. Career memories and accumulated knowledge were published in his book "Fire in Our Lives". His many articles appear in Firehouse, Fire Engineering, Time, and Nutley Neighbors Magazine. Wilson is the recipient of awards from the Nutley Jaycees, Nutley Rotary, Knights of Columbus, NJ Citizens Alliance for Fire Safety, Nutley Elks, American Legion, VFW, American Red Cross, Nutley Emergency and Rescue Squad, H & R Block, Nutley Board of Commissioners, and New Jersey State Legislature.He and his wife live in Nutley.
