Conveniently located in the Hunterdon Hills Plaza, 1386 Hwy 22W, Lebanon. F l at F e e t By Howard J. Tzorfas D.P.M. Why is having flatfeet a problem? Ninety percent of foot problems are inherited – included in that is having flat feet. Flatfeet, or excessive pronation, is when a person's feet will literally look flat or, over time, their feet can flatten out from walking. This excessive motion is called pronation. Obviously, onee doesn't want to have too much pronation. When your feet do flatten out too much they affect the rest of your body, possibly causing your knees to rotate in and your hips to rotate out, resulting in lower back pain and knee pain. When your feet are out of alignment it can cause other problems in your body. Having flatfeet can cause your feet to change as you get older. Without the proper support, bones in your feet can change and shift causing bunions, hammertoes, and painful feet. People can also develop arthritis in their feet. A very common problem called plantar fasciitis, an inflammation of the ligament on the bottom of your feet, can be aggravated by excessive pronation or flat feet. It's very important to pay attention to your feet and have them examined by a podiatrist who can help keep your foot problems from exacerbating. One of the best things to assist with excessive pronation or flatfeet is to get into a pair of custom arch supports called orthotics. (Yes, you can attempt to try to help yourself by getting a pair of Dr. Scholl's over-the-counter but they are not very good.) It's really important visit with a podiatrist and get evaluated by a medical specialist who could provide you with the best care. (Most insurances cover orthotics.) DR. HOWARD J.
