Has it been on your to-do list for months, even years? If so, you're not alone: nearly 68% of Americans don't have a Will. Even if you are one of the few who does have a Will, it may need updated to reflect life changes or to clearly express your wishes. What is a will? Your Will (Last Will and Testament) is a legal document that outlines your wishes for after you pass away. This includes how you want to distribute your assets such as property, money, and jewelry. It also names guardians that you would want to care for your minor children after you die. You can even provide for the care of your pets in your Will. Your Will is also where you name an Executor. The Executor is the person you choose to settle your affairs on your behalf after you pass. Who should have a Will? Many people think they don't need a Will because they don't have a lot of assets or money. Others believe that their family members will know what they want to have happen when they die. The truth is that every adult should have a Will. Putting your wishes in writing takes the burden off your loved ones to guess (and argue) about what you "would have wanted". Further, without a Will in place, a court will decide who your Executor will be and who will receive your belongings. If you have minor children, the court will also decide who will be the guardian to care for them. What if I already have a Will? Even if you already have a Will, it is important to have it reviewed and updated. Changes in the law and in your life can affect your needs and desires. Have you recently gotten married, divorced, or remarried? Have you had a child? Have you yourself inherited property? Is there someone special in your life that you want to provide for? Is the person you named as Executor still willing and able to perform that task? These are all questions to ask when updating your Will. What are you waiting for? Now that you know how important it is to have a Will, don't delay. By: Sharon McGeehan - W.I.T.S certified Personal Trainer, Senior Trainer, Aquatics Trainer/Instructor and Lifestyle Fitness Coach Walking is one of the most common and easiest exercises to do. It requires little to no equipment with the exception of good shoes. As the weather cools, warmer clothing becomes essential, especially layers. As we are into the Fall season, the days are getting shorter. If you find yourself walking in the dark, add reflective clothing so you are visible to everyone around you. To increase the intensity of your daily walk, pick up the pace from the one you usually do. Try a course with more hills on it. Pump your arms as you walk, or add small hand weights. Try ankle weights, if your knees and hips allow. To engage your core while you're moving, think about pulling your belly button toward your spine. Stand up straight, push your shoulders back and keep your chin parallel to the ground. Keep your focus about five feet in front of you. If you find yourself inside because of the weather or dark, there are ways to increase the intensity of treadmill workouts. Increase your speed and incline safely. You want to gradually increase your incline if you're not used to walking uphill. Walking for longer periods of time and more frequently will help increase your cardiovascular level and stamina. Never underestimate the workout that you can get from going up and down a set of steps repeatedly! Before you start, remember to warm up for five-to-ten minutes. Exercises that you can do to warm up your legs can consist of knee raises, knee bends, bringing your foot up behind you to stretch your legs and lifting your heels up and down on a step to help stretch/strengthen the calves. To help warm up your upper body you can do shoulder shrugs, arm circles, and movements in the torso. You'll find some people are more interested in how many steps they take than the fundamental movement of walking. Going outside into the fresh air changes your perspective and your mood!
