3 o c t o b e r 2 0 2 3 Carol Beder's –Julie Flynn October is a busy month! Of course, it's the month of Halloween, with all of the fun activities that go with it. One of my sweet memories from when our kids were little was Pumpkin Carving Night at Patrick McGaheran School – we never missed it – but I sure do now. A wonderful local event is Pumpkin Fest in downtown Clinton on Friday, October 20 from 6:00 to 9:00 pm – creative and fun! If you have little kids in your house, you might want to consider Clinton Township's Trunk Or Treat (for a hauntingly good time!) on Saturday, October 28 from 2:00 - 5:00 pm at Bundt Park. (See page 20 of this issue for more information about that). Also, the Clinton Township Police, along with Annandale Hose Company, Fraternal Order Of Police Lodge 182, and other community organizations are throwing their Annual Halloween Bash (see page 2 of this issue) on Halloween in Annandale Village – a must-do event! For many of you, as it was in our house for several years, Halloween has also evolved into "Crank out the College Applications Eve," since Early Decision applications are/were usually due on the first of November. This was quite terrifying, in a very different sort of way, for both high school seniors and their parents. While small princesses, goblins, and pint-sized batmen show up at the door trick-or-treating, our teens were upstairs grinding away on those application essays. I used to try to give you all advice about those college applications, but the process changes so much every couple of years that I don't dare attempt to now. One of our advertisers does, however: Nicole Smith at Next Step Advising, LLC. Nicole helped my son prepare for his college interviews and he got into the college of his choice. October is also Breast Cancer Awareness Month. According to www. NationalBreastCancer.org, "One in eight women in the United States will be diagnosed with breast cancer in her lifetime. Chances are, you know at least one person who has been personally affected by breast cancer. But there is hope! When caught in its earliest, localized stages, the five-year relative survival rate is 99%. Advances in early detection and treatment methods have significantly increased breast cancer survival rates in recent years, and there are currently over 3.8 million breast cancer survivors in the United States. Awareness of the facts and statistics surrounding breast cancer in the United States is key in empowering individuals to make informed decisions about their health." I got my yearly mammogram yesterday and, as I'm writing this, I'm still awaiting the results. Hopefully, all will be well but if it isn't, I'd rather know than not know. My parting message to you this month is the one I always give my kids when they embark on any adventures, "Have Fun, Be Safe!!"
