Call us today! 732.672.9745 New Jersey author Michael Gabriele will present a program on his newest book, Colonial Taverns of New Jersey – Libations, Liberty and Revolution, published by The History Press, on Thursday, July 27 from 1:00 to 2:00 pm at the North County Branch (Old Farmer's Market; 65 Halstead Street) o f t h e H u n t e r d o n C o u n t y L i b r a r y S y s t e m . T a v e r n s w e r e a n i m p o r t a n t p a r t o f the colonial landscape. New Jersey was the "Crossroads of the American Revolution" and as battles raged, colonial taverns formed the social network that held the state together. Taverns were the stage for the unfolding drama of a colony transitioning into statehood and making decisions about declaring a war of independence. Taverns housed the daily experiences of people during the colonial era, and their stories provide a window into the state's history from that period. New Jersey had myriad colonial taverns (over 400) along well-traveled routes, due to the demand for carriage travel between New York and Philadelphia—transporting people and commercial goods. A haven for Patriots and Loyalists alike, the colonial tavern was the main stage for key debates on the question of independence and conversations on politics and daily life. George Washington used taverns as headquarters, where he drafted his many letters and planned strategy with his generals. They were the "seedbeds" for the revolution, strongholds for political activities, beacons for travelers, and venues for entertainment, merriment, and libations. Once the Revolutionary War began, taverns became recruitment stations for colonial militias and meeting places for local committees of safety. The book focuses on activities associated w i t h t a v e r n s i n C l i n t o n , H a d d o n f i e l d , B o r d e n t o w n , B u r l i n g t o n , P r i n c e t o n , P i s c a t a w a y , N e w B r u n s w i c k , T r e n t o n , N e w a r k , M o r r i s t o w n a n d a l l p o i n t s i n between. It spotlights the lives of New Jersey's little-known colonial/Revolutionary War luminaries such as Captain Thomas Jones of Clinton, Elizabeth Haddon, Jacob Hyer, Christopher Ludwick, Cyrus Bustell, Timothy Matlack, John Dickinson, Ann Risley, John Neilson, John Woolman and Henry Lyon. Joining Gabriele on the program will be guest speakers Don Sherblom, a historian with the 1756 Vought House organization, a n d H a n k B o n n e l l , w h o i s r e b u i l d i n g his ancestor's tavern located in Clinton.
