Written by Marsha Norman with lyrics by Lucy Simon, the musical is based on the beloved children's novel by Frances Hodgson Burnett. The Secret Garden premiered on Broadway in 1991 and won a Tony Award for Best Book of a Musical. The show dramatizes the tale of ten-year-old Mary Lennox (played by Malynna Anthes of Stewartsville and Abigail Wrigley of Asbury), orphaned daughter of a British officer stationed in India during a cholera epidemic in the early 20th century. Sent to her uncle's estate in Yorkshire, England, Mary is left to wander the mansion and gardens, as her uncle Archibald Craven (Michael Waskiewicz of Annandale) grieves the death of his wife, Lily (Faith Brown of Freemansburg, PA and Amanda Livesey of Whitehouse Station). The house is full of secrets, including a boy named Colin (Julian Mortensen of Glen Gardner and Blake Wolcott of Stewartsville) who is Mary's cousin, a story of love and loss, and a garden that has been locked for ten years. Other notable characters in the story are Archibald's brother, Dr. Neville Craven (Andy Kapetanakis of Asbury), housekeeper Mrs. Medlock (Sue Disko of Lebanon Township), a maid named Martha (Brittany Comayagua of Nazareth, PA and Emily Miljkovic of Phillipsburg), Martha's brother Dickon (Tom Farber of High Bridge), the gardener Ben Weatherstaff (Jerry Cahill of Hampton), and Mary's parents Albert (Bill LePore of Phillipsburg) and Rose (Peggy Ippolito of Flemington). Memories of Mary's past in India are represented by a chorus of Dreamers, including her Ayah (Judy Segers of Flemington) and a Hindu Fakir (Jeanne Dunham of Clinton), British officers, and their families (Bob Adams, Dale Dabour, Megan Joyce Fisher, Margaret Gartlgruber, Lynne Healey, Steve Hill, Emily Ippolito, Jim Knight, Laura Mortensen, Daisy Parker, Megan Povlich, Margaret Ricketts, Zachary Rustay, Dawn Schmauch, Edie Sidebotham, Kathy Snow, and Ed Winnick). A Children's Chorus (Kahlan Simmonds, Lila Fischer, Kathryn Giles, Karenna Gutierrez, and Reese Hoffman) helps to reflect Mary's experiences in India and her new life in England. The show is directed by Mary Meo and music directed by Kathy Snow and Vincent Angeline. Production assistants are Linda Lauchaire, Diane Lehnert, and Kristeen DeCristofaro. Ronna Hill serves as stage manager. Tickets, at $15 for adults and $12 for senior citizens (over 65) and children age 11 and younger, can be ordered on the CAST website: www. ClintonAreaStageTroupe.com/tickets-1. All shows are at 7:00 pm. CAST's production of The Secret Garden is by special arrangement with Samuel French and Concord Theatricals. "Never respect men merely for their riches, but rather for their philanthropy; we do not value the sun for its height, but for its use." ~ Gamaliel Bailey
