More likely than not, the real reason for these missed opportunities to spend time with others or do physical activities is the lack of strength to do so. The solution is totally in your control by merely committing yourself to doing some form of strength and conditioning training. It doesn't require much, just a commitment to maintain and increase your strength, which is easily accomplished, and then life's opportunities become a yes. If you could do one thing to improve your health, strength training should be at the top of your list. It involves using one or more muscle groups to perform a specific task, such as lifting a weight or squatting. Strength training may enhance your quality of life and improve your ability to do everyday activities. Strength training can also protect your joints from injury. Building muscle can contribute to better balance and may reduce your risk of falls. This can help you maintain independence as you age. What is strength training? Strength training is also known as weight training, resistance training and muscular training. Where you use your body weight or equipment to build muscle mass, strength and endurance. Depending on the type of strength training you choose to reach your goals, you can use various equipment (or none at all). Examples include: Body weight training: using your own body weight to perform various movements such as squats, pushups, planks, pull ups and lunges. Free weights: such as dumbbells, barbells, kettlebells, medicine balls or objects around the house. Weight machines: machines with adjustable weights to provide resistance to the muscles. Suspension equipment: Consisting of ropes or straps that are attached to an anchor point in which a person uses their body weight and gravity to perform various exercises. Whatever type of strength training you choose to perform, the goal is to put your muscles under tension to stimulate muscle growth. With regular strength training, your muscles will become stronger making your everyday activities easier!
