By: Michelle Gill - Bachelors in Exercise Science from the University of Kentucky, Certified Personal Trainer, Senior Fitness Specialist and Nutrition Coach through NASM Spending time in nature directly boosts physical and mental well- being and is a super healthy activity! But just how healthy is it? Is an hour in the garden the equivalent of spending it at the gym? Gardening is considered to be moderate exercise by the American Heart Association and you can easily burn the same amount of calories gardening as you would at the gym. Beyond its caloric benefits, gardening can also help improve dexterity and strength, muscle mass, aerobic endurance and functional movement. Studies have proven that digging in the dirt can even help enhance bone density! Breaking it down, gardening incorporates all four types of exercise: endurance, strength, balance and flexibility. Gardening should be thought of as a whole-body exercise that works all of the major muscle groups including legs, buttocks, back, abdomen, neck, arms and shoulders. Gardening can boost your mental health, too! Beyond the physical benefits, there are a number of mental perks associated with gardening and working with plants. Outdoor gardening = Vitamin D. This vitamin D not only serves as a mood booster but it's also an important nutrient for every single organ system including our bones, brain, heart, kidneys and immune system. We have many community gardens in our beautiful part of New Jersey. Community gardening, in particular, can help decrease feelings of isolation and boost self-esteem as it allows people to get together socially and be a part of a project. The act of gardening, whether on a small scale or a larger one, requires a mulitstep thinking process. Studies have shown that the activity can help to improve cognitive function, including the ability to concentrate. It has also been reported that the benefits of gardening projects can delay the symptoms of dementia. Beautiful weather is in bloom! We hope you take the time to get some dirt under your nails and grow something beautiful… while doing something good for your body, mind and soul!
