It was a June 8th luncheon that got the whole thing started. We had our banquet tables all gussied up with spanking new tablecloths and flowers, fancy food and an inspiring TED TALK given by extraordinary woman Dame Stephanie Shirley, to watch and discuss. It was the start of a new chapter in my life that I didn't see coming but that has turned out to be one of my great blessings. Forever grateful to those who made it happen then and to those who help to make it happen now. Coincidentally, this year we are once again meeting on a Thursday, June 8, and the story of another extraordinary woman will lead us as we go forward... ~ a n n i e l e i B o v i t Z ~ Isn't it wonderful how the designation of ART is now bestowed on many more manifestations of creativity than ever before? We now celebrate culinary artists, fashion as art, the design of interior spaces and furnishings, graffiti, technology, tattoo art, landscape, film making, comedy and on and on. Starting in the late 19th century, photography was making its way into the imaginations of creatives who would bring it to a place of respectability as a new art form. From Alfred Stieglitz, to Edward Steichen, to Henri Cartier-Bresson, to Man Ray, to Diane Arbus, to Ansel Adams, to Richard Avedon, and many more, photography now hangs in museums as art, along with the classic art forms. Our extraordinary woman, Annie Leibowitz, was born in 1949. Her plans to become a fine artist, a painter, were interrupted by the lure of the camera. By 1970 at 21 years of age she started working at ROLLING STONE MAGAZINE becoming the "lens" of that publication. VOGUE, VANITY FAIR, The White House, Hollywood and Buckingham Palace among others, have all called for her legendary artistry as a portraitist. The Library of Congress has declared her a Living Legend, and she is the first woman to have a feature exhibition at Washington's National Portrait Gallery.
