VGOO is the only nonprofit organization in New Jersey, and one of only a few in the country, that utilize volunteers to serve as guardians for incapacitated adults with no one else to serve in this role. Because of our volunteers, older people with dementia and other adults with mental illness and developmental disabilities have someone that is committed to just one person and making sure that they are living their lives in a manner that reflects their wishes and values and ensures they are safe, their assets are protected, and they are not forgotten. "We are gratified to learn about this funding award that will allow us to continue doing positive and needed work for foster youth in our region. As children enter the foster care system during these post-Covid years, the work we do for children and families has evolved to include more concrete supports, a greater recognition of the mental health toll the pandemic took, and a deeper focus on educational advocacy," said Tracey Heisler, Executive Director of CASA SHaW. "This CDBG funding will enable us to continue our work in Somerset County throughout the coming year." As part of the application process, Heisler and CASA volunteer Kala Sivasubramanian gave a presentation about the value of CASA and how the organization continues to have a long-term, positive impact on children and families in Somerset County. CASA SHaW serves all children in foster care within Somerset, Hunterdon, and Warren Counties. "One of our agency goals is to raise awareness in the community about the work we do and, most importantly, the importance to a child of having at least one stable, caring, and competent adult in their life. This is the greatest predictor for any child to thrive," said Heisler. "I am so very proud of our advocates, board, and staff for the advocacy, resources, and support they provide the foster care community, but even more so for being the adults that stand beside children in foster care throughout the experience," Heisler added. "We are all so lucky to have them doing such good work for the most vulnerable among us." CASA of Somerset, Hunterdon, and Warren Counties is part of a statewide network of community-based, non-profit programs that recruit, screen, train and supervise volunteers to "Speak Up for a Child" removed from home due to abuse or neglect. CASA is the only program in New Jersey that uses trained volunteers to work one-on-one with children, ensuring that each one gets the services needed and achieves permanency in a safe, nurturing home.
