When it first came out in the UK, I remember trialing a class and thinking 'what am I doing here, this is too easy'… Then somehow, I booked the next class and all of a sudden, I was hooked. Having had all sorts of back issues due to various traumas, it helped me manage the pain and strengthen my posture, giving a great muscle tone and range of movement. I think for me the 'light bulb' moment occurred when I realized that Pilates is not just copying what the instructor is doing but understanding how it is done and realizing that even though it looks as if you are not doing much, the concentration, balance, strength and stability required are actually very challenging. Our current lifestyle often pushes us into 'shortcuts' that create compensations and cheat patterns that sooner or later will lead to injuries, inability to perform certain movements and postural imbalances. The old saying 'no pain, no gain' is now greatly outdated and Pilates has shown that. You do not need to be in pain to achieve your goals. Through joint mobility, control balance, breath, core stability and pelvic floor work, we can perform so much better. This is valid for everyone from the person doing heavy weightlifting (think of how much easier your squats will feel if you have a full range and stability at the shoulder and the hip joint so your back and your knees will not need to compensate anymore), to the person wanting to be able to function in everyday life without anybody else's help (comfortably be able to get up from the sofa, walk down the road without the fear of falling, or just managing back, shoulders or neck pain). Mat-work Pilates is brilliant as it can be done anywhere and at any time, most of the gym and sport centers nowadays offer this type of class. Pilates equipment is the other option if you want a more in-depth, different and often challenging workout. Our Pilates Studio at Hunterdon Wellness Center in Whitehouse Station now gives people the opportunity to practice with the Pilates equipment and experience a completely different type of practice. So, whether you are an athlete, a first-time exerciser, a woman or a man, older or young, I do recommend you give it a go and see the difference that it will make with your body, performance, mood and overall strength.
