3 a p r i l 2 0 2 3 I try to get this publication as perfect as possible before going to print, but it never works out that way. I usually have a couple of days of ignorant bliss after saying (nicely), "Go to print!" and before getting the actual printed copies and finding the before unseen, inevitable typos, and annoying little slips. Usually I let it go and hope that they're not too irksome to others, but I just have to point out this one, from last month's issue, as it involves my name: ☞ Clearly, I was rushing to go to print. I wasn't going for a twist on the phrase In Like Flynn, and there's no such thing as a Julie Flynn Lion – actually, if there is, let me know about it! I'm not even a Leo (I'm a Capricorn, which also explains things.) So anyway, I apologize if that sign-off last month caused any confusion. Speaking of confusion, as I'm writing this in early March, we've just set the clocks ahead to my favorite time of year, Daylight Saving Time, when it's lighter outside, later. As I wrote last year, I thought that this spring would be the last time that we have to change the (dang) clocks. Well, according to Time.com, "The future of Daylight Saving Time remains in limbo. Sen. Rubio introduced the Sunshine Protection Act in the Senate (while Rep. Buchanan did so in the House), but there is no certainty whether it will pass or once again be hindered in Congress." They go on, "The only other way the U.S. could make Daylight Saving Time permanent on the national level is if a state or local government were to formally request the U.S. Secretary of Transportation with 'detailed information' as to why the change 'would serve the convenience of commerce'... Last year, there were at least 450 bills considered across state legislatures that would make Daylight Saving Time year-round if a federal law passes... some experts say that could harm Americans. Research by the Society for Research on Biological Rhythms found that there are greater advantages to making standard time permanent, as opposed to Daylight Saving Time... Implementing a permanent switch to Daylight Saving Time would harm our bodies because it would increase the difference between the social clock and the body clock. Doing so, they say, is 'associated with decreased life expectancy, shorten[ed] sleep, cause mental and cognitive problems, and contribute to the many sleep disturbances in our societies that are estimated to cost approximately 2% of the gross domestic product.' Why all the hand-wringing?! Oh my goodness, I can't even. We don't want to figure out time travel, we just want to keep the clocks at one time, or another – or halfway in-between. If you've ever sat in on a CTSD PTA meeting, you know that they'd have this thing figured out in about five minutes. Ten, tops. It's not that hard. In the meantime, I hope you're enjoying your evening sunshine(!) and turning a blind eye to any mistakes you may find in this issue.
