Less products applied at the optimum time will produce higher quality at lower cost. More products or procedures performed at the wrong or "less than optimum" time of year will increase cost with less than acceptable quality. Lawn aeration or thatching performed in the spring will increase pressure from crabgrass and broadleaf weeds and necessitate additional applications to maintain or improve turf quality. Winter freeze and thaw of the soil root zone will relieve compaction and minimize the need for mechanical aeration in the spring. Fall aeration is far more effective relieving compaction created over the spring and summer. Spring thatching and aeration removes surface insulation and increases the potential for draught stress. If you're only going to fertilize once a year and want the most benefit for root development, turf density and overall turf quality; fertilize in the fall. To promote optimum turf health and quality; apply 2/3 of your lawn's yearly nitrogen in the fall, 1/3 in the spring. Excessive late spring fertilization increases top grow at the expense of the root system and requires mowing at shorter intervals to maintain quality. Fertilizing at this time of year without follow up applications in the fall will inevitably produce a thin green lawn more prone to weeds, disease and insect damage. This in turn requires additional applications to maintain or improve quality. The proper products and procedures along with proper timing can provide for maximum turf quality at minimum cost.
