Ask Officer Raff:
Dear Officer Raff,
I received a phone message which stated it was "Publishers
Clearing House" and requested I call a phone number to
claim my prize ($7,000 a week). I did not call the number as
I realized I had never entered their sweepstakes so I could not
have won. I did Google Publishers Clearing House Sweepstakes
and found their phone number listed was different from the phone number I
received on the message service. I presumed the phone message was an attempt
to defraud. The information Google gave suggested that phone calls such as this
should be reported to the local police. I hope other seniors are aware of this.
Sincerely,
Elizabeth H.
Hi Elizabeth,
Thank you for sharing this information. You are correct, these
types of phone calls are associated with scammers and should be
reported to your local police department. Even if the recipient of the
telephone calls has not suffered a monetary loss, it is still important that
law enforcement be notified, for intelligence gathering purposes and so we
can remind our communities to be on the lookout for these scams. Other
common scams include the "Grandparents Bail Scam," IRS and
Social Security scams and "Geek Squad" scams. According to the
Federal Trade Commission (FTC) website (https://consumer.ftc.gov/
articles/how-avoid-scam), there are four signs that a phone call is
most likely a scam:
1. Scammers PRETEND to be from an organization you know.
2. Scammers say there's a PROBLEM or a PRIZE.
3. Scammers PRESSURE you to act IMMEDIATELY.
4. Scammers tell you to PAY in a specific way.
Please follow us on social media to receive notifications of scams
in our area, visit the FTC website for additional information and as
always, if you are unsure, please contact your local police department
for assistance.
Regards, Officer Raff

"Love is such a powerful force. It's there for everyone
