By: Cheryl Getz - Bachelors Degree in Exercise Science & Human Movement, ACSM Certified Personal Trainer November is Diabetes Awareness Month! Diabetes is a chronic health condition that affects how your body turns food into energy. It is estimated that 34.2 million people have it. However, within that number, 7.3 million adults aged 18 or older are undiagnosed! This is very concerning information since it affects someone's health contributing to their quality of life. There are two types of Diabetes. Type 1 is a chronic condition in which the Pancreas produces little or no Insulin. Type 2 Diabetes is a chronic condition that affects the way the body processes blood sugar. With Type 2, the body either doesn't produce enough Insulin or is resistant to it. During the eating process, our bodies break down our food we eat at different stages, sugar is released into the bloodstream during this. When our blood sugar goes up, it signals the Pancreas to release Insulin. Insulin acts like a key or doorway, allowing blood sugar to enter your body's cells for use as energy. When a person has Diabetes and their bodies don't have enough Insulin or cells stop responding to the Insulin, too much blood sugar stays in the bloodstream. Over time, this can cause serious health problems, such as heart disease, vision loss and kidney disease. However, the type of sugar we eat is very important! We want to choose healthy sugars which are found in fruits, vegetables, whole grains and dairy products. Sugars found in processed foods, desserts, candy and refined grains is what we want to avoid or limit/eat in moderation. There isn't a cure yet for Diabetes, but eating healthy well- balanced food, losing weight and being active can really help. It is important to have annual blood work completed so you know where you stand with your blood sugar levels! Regular physical activity not only helps in this area of your health and wellbeing but in all areas of your life.Come see what we are all about at the Hunterdon Health and Wellness Centers!
