As host you want your guests to have a good time, but you have a responsibility to keep them safe. So, before cranking up the grill, take a few moments to: Check your surroundings - Clear your house or yard, any place your guests can access, of all debris – hoses, extension cords, rugs – anything that can cause a tripping hazard. Provide adequate lighting, especially on walkways and stairs. Clearly mark areas of disrepair – loose steps, holes or protrusions in walkways or floors, etc. If you knowingly avoid repairing or marking these areas, you could be liable for any injuries to your guests. Assign pool supervision - If you have a pool, make sure there's a responsible adult available to supervise whenever anyone – child or adult – is in the water. Consider rotating shifts to keep the supervising adult alert and free from distraction. Plan a safe menu - It doesn't take long for food to spoil in the summer heat. Adequate refrigeration is necessary. Be sure to cook meats to safe temperatures and put food away between courses. Be aware of any allergies your guests have and mark foods accordingly. Lastly, pay particular attention to the beverages being consumed. When serving alcohol, have food and non-alcoholic options available as well. Keep all alcohol off limits to underage guests and do not continue to serve a visibly impaired guest. Under New Jersey's Social Host laws, you have a potential liability for any injuries an intoxicated guest causes to a third party. This law applies not only to property owners but to all adults over the age of 18 who have the authority to provide access to the property. And it doesn't matter if you provide the alcohol or if a guest brings it; you only need to be aware that alcohol is being consumed at your party. Enjoy the rest of your summer and stay safe! – Victor Rotolo 502 U.S. 22 Lebanon, NJ 08833 908∙534∙7900 www.KearnsRotoloLaw.com Tony Kearns and Vic Rotolo Working Together to Protect What's Important to You "A reader lives a thousand lives before he dies. "We started this podcast as a way to further our community outreach with individuals of all backgrounds about the trends and issues surrounding foster care," said Tracey Heisler, Executive Director of CASA SHaW. "The multi-faceted issues and discussions we are having through the CASA Connection reach far beyond just our region and state. We hope that folks throughout the United States, and even the world, find the information we are sharing valuable," she added. Individuals can subscribe to the CASA Connection podcast on Apple Podcasts, Podbean, Amazon Music, and iHeartRadio. Three episodes have been published to date: CASA 101: What is CASA?, Poverty in Foster Care, and Mental Health in Foster Care. The podcast is hosted by Heisler and CASA SHaW's Director of Community Outreach, Jeff Warren. Heisler said while smiling, "It's called the CASA Connection for a reason. We want to connect more folks with the many issues that face foster children and families who have challenges." Heisler also said, "The more connection, education, and resources we have, the more we are able to combat the many challenges abused and neglected children face." CASA of Somerset, Hunterdon, and Warren Counties is part of a statewide network of community-based, non-profit programs that recruit, screen, train and supervise volunteers to "Speak Up for a Child" removed from home due to abuse or neglect. CASA is the only program in New Jersey that uses trained volunteers to work one-on-one with children, ensuring that each one gets the services needed and achieves permanency in a safe, nurturing home.
