C O M C r i m e s t O p p e r s O F h u n t e r d O n C O u n t y www.CrimeStoppersHunterdon.com The following is the first in a series of articles about Crime Stoppers of Hunterdon County, a community-based partnership between the community, the media, and law enforcement. Crime Stoppers of Hunterdon County – Page Two: In March 2012, the Hunterdon County Prosecutor's Office, in partnership with the Hunterdon County Police Department and a group of concerned citizens, launched Hunterdon County Crime Stoppers (HCCS), the first program in Hunterdon County that directly engages the community to positively impact crime reduction and public safety. A 501(c)(3) non-profit organization, HCCS is led by volunteers to help law enforcement stop crime by rallying citizens, and providing an avenue for them to safely and anonymously report information about criminal activity. What is the purpose of Crime Stoppers? Crime Stoppers is based on the principal that someone (other than the criminal) has information that can solve a crime, but three major problems were identified as being faced by law enforcement in generating that information: • Fear of reprisal • Apathetic attitude • Reluctance to get involved To combat these issues, HCCS assures anonymity to individuals who provide information about a crime, and pays a cash reward to such individuals when the information they provide leads to an arrest and conviction. How do we assure the caller remains anonymous? Each caller with information about a crime is assigned a code number that is received through a secure tips line, or through a secure web connection operated by a professional program coordinator. Why do we need Crime Stoppers in Hunterdon County? In Hunterdon County we're lucky to have a relatively low amount of crime, but we are not, unfortunately, crime-free. The police department deals with criminals. Why do we need Crime Stoppers? We celebrate law enforcement in our community, and work in partnership with the police department and prosecutors office by doing our part to keep our community safe. HCCS strength is in its ability to protect the identity of informants. No person's identity will ever be compromised, not even when Hunterdon County Crime Stoppers has been subpoenaed by the courts. And, HCCS offers a reward to a caller whose information about a crime leads to an arrest and conviction. So, what is the goal of Crime Stoppers? At the core of creating a safer community is preventing crime. Our goal is to engage our entire community – citizens, media, and law enforcement – to work towards making our communities safer by identifying the people committing crimes and getting them off the streets. And importantly, assuring those with information that their identity remains anonymous. See Something, Say Something, Receive a Cash Reward -- All Anonymously. Up next: More Questions Answered! Daisy troop 80283 recently visited Grayrock Farm Sanctuary, a 10-acre family run facility dedicated to providing a lifetime of quality care for rescued animals. Located at 85 Grayrock Road in Clinton, the Sanctuary is home to a variety of horses, goats, pot bellied pigs, hens, roosters, ducks and barn cats. The Gervasi family began their mission of rescuing farm animals three years ago. The twelve first grade Daisies brought food for the animals from an approved list and were given additional treats to feed them when they arrived. They walked the property and learned from the owners how they lovingly care for their rescues. Afterward the girls spent time in the farm's party room coloring and enjoying a snack of their own. The Daisies earned an Animal Care badge for the meeting. Grayrock Farm Sanctuary gratefully accepts donations to offset the cost of providing food and vet care to their animals.
