The girls were given a behind-the-scenes look at the planning and work that goes into making a musical production. "I learned that you have to practice a lot to get everything just right so people will enjoy the show," said Girl Scout Amelia Almond. The tour started in the auditorium where the girls watched a tap number featuring Ariel, Scuttle and bird characters. From there they went to the choir room to see the chefs rehearse Les Poissons and then visited the band room. "My favorite part was the orchestra because I got to see a cellist," said fourth grader Nadia Lazovick, who is currently learning cello at Round Valley School. When rehearsal ended, Director Mary Hopta and Vocal Music Director Heidi Peterson stayed to show the girls the stage. They got to see the water scenery rise and had a chance to pose on Prince Eric's ship. The Girl Scouts returned to the high school in early March to see the complete show. Sydney Burke said that she enjoyed the character Scuttle the Seagull because she was "fun and silly." Mika McConnell enjoyed Sebastian the most, especially the scene with the chefs "when they were pulled under the table." "We loved having the girls come behind the scenes with us. It is always great to meet the next generation of actors and see theater come to life in their eyes," said Hopta. "If every day is an awakening, you will never grow old. You will just keep growing." ~ Gail Sheehy
