Why be concerned about falling?
• Falls and fall-related injuries are the leading cause of
accidental death in older people.
• Half of seniors who fall, will fall again within a year.
• Nearly half of the seniors who fall reduce their activity
after a fall.
• Most fractures among older adults are caused by falls.
What if you or your loved ones could wear a simple brace in their
shoes to prevent falling or injury? There is a newly prescribed, custom-
made ankle-foot orthosis (AFO) designed to easily fit into most shoes.
What is a custom AFO? An ankle-foot orthosis, or AFO, is a support
intended to control the position and motion of the ankle, compensate for
weakness, or correct deformities. AFOs can be used to support weak limbs,
or to position a limb with contracted muscles into a more normal position. In
addition, AFOs are used to control foot drop caused by a variety of neurologic
and musculoskeletal disorders. Due to the common use for addressing foot
drop, AFO has become synonymous with the term "foot-drop brace." The goal
of AFO use is to stabilize the foot and ankle and provide toe clearance during
the swing phase of gait, helping decrease the risk of catching the toe and falling.
Contact your local podiatrist to see if they provide this brace for
their patients. It involves an office visit where the patient's gait is analyzed
and fiberglass casts are made of both feet. This takes about twenty minutes
for casting and the braces usually arrive in 3-4 weeks. Medicare and most
insurances approve 100%.
