"March, master of winds, bright minstrel and marshal of storms that enkindle the season they smite." ~ Algernon C Swinburne (March: An Ode) "A light exists in Spring... Not present in the year at any other period... When March is scarcely here." ~ Emily Dickinson P A R t n e R S H i P f o R H e A L t H : t i P S f o R M A R C H While it's easy to focus on some of the bad news in our world, there is a tangible activity you can do to increase your happiness and sense of well-being: express gratitude. Gratitude is simply the grateful or thankful appreciation we feel for something we receive. What we receive can be a physical object, like a birthday gift or may be something we can't actually touch but just feel, like appreciating a beautiful sunset. In positive psychology research, gratitude is associated with greater happiness and less stress, both leading to improved wellness and health. It may feel uncomfortable to practice focusing on gratitude at first, but research shows this mental state gets easier with use. 1. Consider keeping a gratitude journal where you write down those things you are thankful for on a daily or weekly basis. Write thank you notes to people in your life whom you appreciate telling them how they have positively impacted you. If writing is not for you, take time to mentally think about those people or things you appreciate on a daily basis and soon, feeling gratitude will become a habit and a better sense of well-being will follow. 1. www.health.harvard.edu/healthbeat/giving-thanks-can-make-you-happier
