By: Cheryl Getz - Fitness Supervisor/Exercise Physiologist at the Hunterdon Health & Wellness Centers, ACSM Certified Personal Trainer Being Healthy means a lot of things! It ranges from having good blood pressure, cholesterol and heart rate, to maintaining normal blood sugar levels. It also means keeping our bones and muscles strong, helping our body stay flexible and maintaining a healthy weight. Also, staying physically active helps to maintain a happy/healthy state of mind! In order to take steps to accomplish what it means to be healthy, we often don't know where to start. A simple yet effective way is to commit to a weekly physical fitness program! Many of us are busy trying to balance work, family and other responsibilities. As a result, our health goals are often put on hold. That said; being healthy does not have to be difficult, just remember small steps can lead to big impact! Cardiovascular exercise helps bring down one's blood pressure, LDL (bad) cholesterol while increasing the good cholesterol (HDL), helps regulate a normal resting heart rate, keeps your blood sugar in check and helps increase stamina for taking on those extra steps! Incorporating a weight training program along with this helps get our muscles and bones stronger which is crucial since the aging process can contribute to muscle mass and bone loss. These two components of an exercise program can help with weight loss/maintaining a healthy weight. Throwing in some flexibility stretches/exercises and/or a Yoga/Meditation class or two greatly increases your state of mental health and helps keep your body flexible. Here at the Hunterdon Health and Wellness Centers, you can participate in various classes, exercise floor programs, meet with a Personal Trainer for some unique one-on-one training, treat yourself to a Massage, your options are limitless! We offer a wide variety of exercise classes on land and in the pool. We are excited to roll out the 'Rock Steady' program this month at our Clinton site! Rock Steady is a nationally recognized exercise program for individuals who have Parkinson's disease. This program educates/teaches the discipline behind "large/exaggerated" movements that are beneficial to this specific population. We are also reinstating our "Intro to Power Cycle" class for those interested in cycling their way to a healthier lifestyle! Come see what we are all about and let us help you make this your year to commit to yourself!
