You wouldn't go to a heart specialist to set your broken arm, so why go to a criminal lawyer to file a simple will? The legal field, not unlike the medical field, comprises multiple disciplines. Here's a look at some of the more common areas of practice and the kind of cases each covers to help you choose the right type of lawyer when necessary. Family Law is most often associated with divorce and the related issues of alimony; child custody, support, and visitation; and property distribution. But this area of law also covers an array of other issues, including adoptions, domestic violence and related orders of protection, estates and wills, grandparents' rights, guardianship or caretaker arrangements for minors and dependent adults, name changes, prenuptial- and postnuptial-agreements—virtually anything related to family and disputes that arise between family members. Personal Injury Law seeks to obtain compensation for injuries and losses resulting from motor vehicles and boating accidents, burns, construction accidents, defective products, dog bites, and slip and falls. A personal injury lawyer can also help with cases of elder abuse or nursing home injuries. Criminal Law covers felonies (generally punishable by more than one year in prison, e.g., murder, assault with a deadly weapon, grand larceny), misdemeanors (less serious actions punishable by less than one year in jail, e.g., petty thefts, vandalism), and infractions (usually punishable by fines, e.g., certain traffic violations). Business Law pertains mostly to business and contract disputes and business formation procedures. Employment Law covers matters of discrimination due to age, disability, race or religion, overtime laws, severance pay, sexual harassment, whistle-blower protections and wrongful termination. This is a general overview of only some legal disciplines that exist; it's important to note there are sub-specialties within each. Finding a lawyer whose focus most closely relates to your legal needs can save you time and money and increase the likelihood of achieving a favorable outcome. – Victor Rotolo M A n e S t R e A M h o S t S h u g e t A C k S A L e Looking for some riding boots, britches, or a saddle, perhaps? Every day, lives are saved by blood donors in our community. Hunterdon Medical Center depends heavily on regular volunteer blood donors to maintain an adequate and safe blood supply. "Giving blood is the most generous act of kindness that one human being can do for another. When you give blood, you save lives. Blood is used for accident victims, newborn babies and their mothers who need a transfusion, people undergoing surgery, patients receiving treatment for cancer and other diseases," stated Cathy Conroy, Blood Donor Recruiter at Hunterdon Medical Center. She continued, "The blood donated at Hunterdon Medical Center stays here and is used on our patients. So when you donate, no matter what your type, you will be helping your friends and neighbors." To be eligible to donate blood a person must be at least 17 years of age, be in good health and weigh at least 110 pounds, (130 pounds for 17 year olds). In addition, you are eligible to donate if you have had the COVID-19 vaccine. The Blood Bank will screen for COVID-19 antibodies and cholesterol every time you donate. If you would like to schedule an appointment to donate blood or would like more information call Hunterdon Medical Center's Blood Donor Recruiter, Cathy Conroy at: 908. 788.6405 or email her at: cconroy@hhsnj.org.
