Perhaps that's because they're unaware of the true costs associated with speeding and other traffic violations. A national insurance comparison site, The Zebra, calculates that traffic violations can increase car insurance rates anywhere from 0.6% to 73.3% depending on several factors, including the type of violation and the state where the driver lives. The three costliest traffic violations and their projected insurance rate increases on a national average according to the company are: • leaving the scene of an accident (73%) • racing (67.2%) • driving under the influence (65.5%) The Zebra also identified the most expensive driving violations by state. New Jersey's top two violations were identified as refusal to submit to a chemical test and DUI, both of which could hike insurance rates by 71.2%, exclusive of court-imposed penalties. New Jersey drivers face losing their license anywhere from seven months to up to 20 years for refusing a chemical test. DUIs carry penalties of $300 to $1,000 in fines and license suspensions ranging from seven months to 10 years depending on the number of offenses incurred. Other traffic violations that cost New Jersey drivers the most: • leaving the scene of an accident • racing • driving with a suspended license • reckless driving The list of common traffic violations and their impact on car insurance rates may hold a few surprises. For example, speeding could result in a 23.8% insurance rate increase, but did you know that driving too slowly follows close behind, increasing rates by 21.6%? In New Jersey, speeding carries fines ranging from $85 to $260, while driving too slowly carries a fine of $85 plus two points. More importantly, though, is the danger common traffic violations pose for you and others. The National Safety Council found traffic fatalities increased 8% last year over 2019 despite the fact there were 13% fewer vehicles on the road, giving 2020 the distinction of having the highest traffic death rate of the past 96 years. Girl Scouts from Clinton Township Troop 80258 have earned a Silver Award for their project, "Bench for Better." The girls learned that most bottle caps shouldn't be recycled and found a company that was able to repurpose them in a unique way. Marissa Annese, Catherine Brennan and Ava Pecora collected 400 pounds of bottle caps over the course of two years and brought them to a facility that melted and molded them into components of four benches. The girls traveled to and from Indiana in a U-haul for the project. They brought the bench pieces home, assembled them, and delivered the finished product by the first week of school. Two have been placed at the Clinton Township Middle School and two were donated to the Township and placed at Prostak East Overlook. The trail head is located at 40.5980687, -74.8475059 in Google Maps.
