C O M Oktoberfest is an autumn festival originating in Bavaria, Germany, which runs from mid September to early October, featuring the drinking of beer. Clinton Three Q reached out to local breweries for some important beer research in honor of Oktoberfest. We asked each local brewery to tell us: what is their favorite beer from *another* local brewery, and why; as well as their own favorite offerings and upcoming events. From Matt Harrison, Head Brewer at Sunken Silo Brew Works, a small craft brewery located in Lebanon at 1320 US 22 West: Highrail Brewing is the closest brewery to our shop, so I head up there after work every so often. Their small system means there is always something new to try and they always have a great variety of offerings. My go-to has been their Forging America IPA. It is pleasantly bitter and highly crushable; the kind of beer that makes you want another. After a day of schlepping grain around, it really hits the spot, which is why it's so nice having those guys so close by. Let's be honest, sometimes you don't want to hang out at work, after work! In terms of our own brewery, lately I've been drinking our Deemed Essential Czech Pilsner almost exclusively. I can confidently say it is the best lager I've ever brewed. As a small brewery with limited tank space, producing lagers can be a challenge due to much longer fermentation and conditioning time. At the height of the Covid-related shutdowns, we knew we had a smaller window to brew a lager and a Pilsner was the obvious choice. When breweries were deemed essential businesses, the beer named itself. The last weekend of September, Friday- Sunday, Sunken Silo will be hosting our Second Annual Oktoberfest. There will be authentic German-style brews, a stein-hoisting contest, live music, and Metropolitan Seafood with a local take on traditional Oktoberfest offerings. Keep an eye on our social media channels at the end of August for band line-up, session information, and ticket availability. From Todd, Brewer at Lone Eagle Brewing at 44 Stangl Road in Flemington: My current favorite beer by a neighboring brewery has been the kolsch by Highrail Brewing Company; I found it very true to style. In terms of our own brewery, I recommend the Marzen Lager for Oktoberfest; the cooler weather lends itself to the malty-style beer. Lone Eagle offers 12-14 beers on tap, with a balanced board of IPAs, Saisons, Stouts, Porters, Lagers and Ales, available in growlers, crowlers, four packs, and specialty bottles f o r l i m i t e d r e l e a s e beers. We have online ordering, as well as indoor and outdoor tasting room space. For Oktoberfest e v e n t s , w e a t L o n e E a g l e a r e looking forward to Hunterdon Harvest Fest, which is Saturday, October 2, in Flemington. It brings together the best in Hunterdon County food and drink. From Craig Rodgers, Brewer at Highrail Brewing Company, a family-owned craft nano-brewery located at 20 Main Street in High Bridge, NJ: From my view, I'm not big on favorites so it's hard to pick just one beer or cider. I relate more to situations and experience. So for me, I would say any cider while sitting outside on a crisp fall day at Ironbound next to the fire pit with my wife and a group of our closest friends. According to their website, Highrail has 10 brews on tap, available for crowler and growler fills, and also offers cans of their Bridges Tripel Belgian Ale. From Steve Zolnay, Brewmaster at Invertase Brewing Company, located at 51 Broad Street, Phillipsburg, NJ: Our current favorite from our local friends is Ironbound's Highlands Farmhouse cider. We love its complexity of the farmhouse funk from the use of Brett, and because we're all about beer, we love that it's dry hopped as well. Most ciders come off very sweet, but we like that this one finished up dry and is very well balanced. With Oktoberfest coming up, our current favorite from our own brewery is of course our flagship New England IPA, 1954. It's very well balanced with tropical notes of fresh citrus and mango. This beer is very approachable, and keeps you coming back for more! Also be on the lookout for the release of 425, our Imperial pumpkin ale, and a new release, our Oktoberfest style lager as we approach Fall! O u r e v e n t calendar for September and October is packed full of amazing things! We hold Trivia Nights every Thursday evening from 6:00 to 8:00 pm, every Saturday evening we are featuring live music from local musicians, from solo musicians all the way up to full bands. Every Sunday we hold Music Madness Music Trivia from 4:00 - 6:00 pm. Friday October 1 will be the release of our Oktoberfest beer, and Saturday, October 2 is our official Oktoberfest Festival with live music, food trucks and much more! "For me and my family personally, September 11 was a reminder that life is fleeting, impermanent, and uncertain. Therefore, we must make use of every moment and nurture it with affection, tenderness, beauty, creativity, and laughter." ~ Deepak Chopra g i v e B l o o d t o d A y A t h u n t e r d o n m e d i c A l c e n t e r Lives are saved everyday by blood donors in our community.
