3 s e p t e m b e r 2 0 2 1 Carol Beder's When considering writing this September issue column, I was hit with many of my own memories of September 11, 2001. I started that day at 4:45 am. I remember it very clearly because, in addition to our career jobs, my husband and I took on a paper route (in Califon, for the Star Ledger) in order to earn some extra cash to support our growing family. After picking up the papers at the depot and before folding and bagging them to be on my way to deliver, I always took a few minutes to check the day's headlines. One of the biggest stories for that day was the disappearance of Chandra Levy. A couple of hours later our world blew apart and from then on, the headlines were apocalyptic, for many months to come. I could go on about my memories of that day, the people we lost, and memories of the World Trade Center, but I'm going to just keep this column short and encourage you all to take a moment of silence on the twentieth anniversary. I know some of our readers lost loved ones on that day, and others lost family members who were first responders on that day or afterwards, as a result. Thankfully, several others of you were able to escape. My thoughts and prayers are with you all. Brown has announced that Hunterdon County will host the Twentieth Anniversary 9/11 Remembrance Event on the Historic Courthouse steps in Flemington, Saturday, September 11, at 8:30 am. Hunterdon County First Responders who were called into emergency service at the site of the attacks will be honored, as the County traditionally recognizes all those whose lives were taken that day. Sheriff Brown said, "During the 20th Anniversary of the tragic events that unfolded on American soil at the hands of terrorists, not only do we pay our respects to those we lost, including the sixteen lives from Hunterdon County, but we proudly honor the men and women who ran to the scene, answering the call for help in the face of the unknown." Many Rescue Units from municipalities in Hunterdon County sent Emergency Services personnel to ground zero and other locations following the collapse of the Twin Towers. The death toll at the World Trade Center in New York City included 343 firefighters, which included emergency medical technicians, and 71 law enforcement officers. Sheriff Brown concluded, "This year we are extending a special invitation to all county First Responders who were called to the scene at the time of the attacks in 2001 to be honored. The efforts of emergency responder crews gave families hope during a chaotic and uncertain time. We must never forget their valiant service nor the events of that tragic day." The Remembrance Ceremony will include the ringing of the Historic Courthouse Bell a total of sixteen times – each ring represents a Hunterdon County life lost in the 9/11 attacks. Also, the Hunterdon Central Regional High School Choir will perform the National Anthem. The public is invited to join with Hunterdon County officials to honor the memory of all those who perished at the hands of the terrorists and to thank First Responders who assisted with rescue and recovery efforts. Hunterdon County First Responders, please contact Ruthi Cass via email, rcass@co.hunterdon.nj.us or call 908.788.1104, to let the County know you plan to attend. 9 / 11 M e M o r i a l r e - D e D i c a t i o n w i t h t h e a n n a n D a l e h o s e c o M p a n y On Saturday September 11, 2021 at 2:00 pm, the Annandale Hose Company #1 will host a formal ceremony re-dedicating our Memorial located at the Fire House, 68 Beaver Avenue in Annandale, on the 20th Anniversary of the terrorist attacks on our Nation.
