However, how yoga is different from other styles of movement is the commitment to breath, self-awareness, and staying in the present moment. One of the fundamental principles of yoga is that there is no separation between the mind and the body, they are interdependent and interconnected. The most accessible tool to turn down the volume of stress is the conscious breathing used in the yoga poses as well as a focal point for Meditation. The most popular breathing technique used is Ujjayi breath. This style of breathing is inhaling and exhaling through the nose. It is also referred to as "ocean breath" – when practiced, the breath sounds like the ocean. There are many yoga poses implemented according to the person's physical ability. The most simple and basic poses can bring about this state of relaxation. A person can notice a difference in how they feel after only a few minutes of practicing. There is no competition in yoga. It is about achieving abilities to perform flexible poses. Everyone is working at their own pace and within their own body. Meditation is a practice of mindfulness. It is not trying to stop the stream of thoughts in the mind but trying to witness the thoughts without being pulled into their story. Generally, the eyes are closed during Meditation with the focus being on the breath. Some like to listen to music or some focus with their eyes open on an object. It is the quality of the breath and the calmness of the mind that is the true goal. When that is the focal point of the practice, the person will receive the greatest benefits: strong and flexible mind and body, a sense of peacefulness and connection to ourselves as well and everyone and everything else. Here are a few tips to get your home in tip top shape: 1. Review your fire escape plan with your family – how to get out; where to go; how to contact each other. 2. Have a heating professional check your heating system every year – saves energy and money over the long run. 3. Replace your furnace filter(s) – saves $$. 4. Check your home for water leaks – plumbing; water heaters; basement walls, roofs; windows. 5. Protect your home from frozen pipes – wrap those pipes! 6. Have a certified chimney sweep inspect and clean the flues and check your fireplace damper – a MUST! 7. Remove bird nests from chimney flues and outdoor electrical fixtures and remove debris from rain gutters. 8. Inspect and clean dust from the covers of your smoke and carbon monoxide alarms (change batteries if not hard wired). 9. Make sure the caulking around doors and windows is adequate to reduce heat/ cooling loss. Check glazing for loose or missing putty or glazing compound. This will also help reduce water damage to the windows and door frames. 10. Make sure that the caulking around your bathroom fixtures is adequate to prevent water from seeping into the sub-flooring. Check for cracked or missing caulk around the base of your toilet, bath tub, and bathroom cabinets. Properly sealing gaps between your bathroom fixtures and flooring material can prevent damage. 11. Run all gas-powered lawn equipment until the fuel is gone. By doing this, you are removing flammable liquid storage from your garage. At the same time, make sure you aren't storing dirty, oily rags in a pile. They can ignite spontaneously! 12. Test your emergency generator. It will be well worth your time to take a few extra moments to check potential trouble spots in and around your home. Early detection could mean the difference between a simple mop-up job and major construction repairs. Since then we've lived in sunshine and in shadow, and although we can never unsee what happened here, we can also see that children who lost their parents have grown into young adults, grandchildren have been born and good works and public service have taken root to honor those we loved and lost." ~ Michael Bloomberg, 9/11/2011 "Time is passing. Yet, for the United States of America, there will be no forgeing September the 11th. We will remember every rescuer who died in honor. We will remember every family that lives in grief. We will remember the fire and ash, the last phone calls, the funerals of the children." ~ George W.
