From the unconditioned beginner to the fit athlete, working out in
the water is a great way to attain cardiovascular endurance, build muscle
strength, and improve flexibility. Aqua fitness is a form of exercise that
accommodates all ages, abilities, and fitness levels. The following are the
many benefits of working out in the pool.
• Less risk of impact injuries since the buoyancy of the water
provides minimal stress on the joints.
• Muscles are toned and strengthened from the natural resistance
of the water.
• Buoyance of the water helps to stretch tight muscles thus
increasing flexibility.
• Great abdominal workout. While moving through the water, the
core musculature is constantly engaged. Core stabilizers are
strengthened leading to improvement of balance and posture.
• Improved cardiovascular health.
• Hydrostatic pressure improves blood circulation. Water
pressure helps put less strain on the heart by moving blood around
the body.
• Less impact of gravity in the water allows for a greater range
of motion.
• Everyone works at their own ability and speed. You can choose
your own pace and intensity level.
• Adding aqua fitness equipment such as noodles, hand buoys, flex
paddles, and swim mitts in a workout can boost the strengthening
of the muscles. It also is a great way to add variety and challenge to
a workout.
• Gentle mind-body focus exercises such as Yoga, Pilates, and Tai
Chi can be modified and added into an aqua fitness program.
• Great stress reliever, wonderful social activity and it is fun!
