7 j u l y 2 0 2 1 F l at F e e t By Howard J. Tzorfas D.P.M. Why is having flat feet a problem? The vast majority of foot problems are inherited, included in that is having flat feet. Flat feet, or excessive pronation, is when a person's feet literally look flat. It can also can happen over time from walking, flattening one's feet. This excessive motion is called pronation. Obviously, we don't want to have too much pronation. When your feet do flatten out too much they affect the rest of your body, possibly causing one's knees to rotate in and their hips to rotate out. This can cause lower back pain and knee pain stemming from one's feet. Therefore, when your feet are out of alignment it might cause other problems in your body. Having flat feet can cause your feet to change as you get older. Without the proper support bones in your feet they can change and shift, causing bunions, hammertoes and painful feet. One can also develop arthritis in their feet. A very common problem is called plantar fasciitis, which is an inflammation of the ligament on the bottom of your feet which can be aggravated by excessive pronation, or flat feet. It's very important to pay attention to your feet and have them examined by a podiatrist who can keep your feet from getting worse. One of the best things to help with excessive pronation is to get into a pair of custom arch supports, called orthotics. Yes you can attempt to try to help yourself by getting a pair of Dr. Scholl's over-the-counter, but in my opinion, they are not very good. It's really important to go see a podiatrist and get evaluated by a medical specialist, who will provide you with the best care. Most insurances will cover for orthotics.
