By: Kathie Phoenix – Water Safety Instructor, Lifeguarding with CPR/AED for Professional Rescuers and First Aid Swimming is an essential life skill that is beneficial physically and mentally for both children and adults alike. It is a full body workout, and especially beneficial to those individuals who are mobility compromised. The low impact movements are easy on the joints, making it an ideal way to stay active and fit. Mentally it lowers stress levels and reduces anxiety and depression. It also improves sleep patterns and increases energy. Being in the water just gives one an overall feeling of wellbeing. Learning to swim at an early age helps to eliminate fear while building confidence and self-esteem. The swim programs at the Hunterdon Health and Wellness Centers in both Whitehouse and Clinton are based on the Red Cross Guidelines and taught by certified Red Cross Instructors. Our goal is to offer fun filled classes and develop proper swimming skills and technique while stressing safety in and around the water. Our classes range from Parent/Tot through Level VI. Parent/Tot classes focus on water adjustment through active play and singing songs. Such skills as kicking, arm strokes, blowing bubbles and back floating are introduced. The progressive swim program builds on these skills through Level VI, where students are preparing for swim team. At this level, students become proficient in all four competitive strokes, emphasizing endurance using drills to perfect their technique. Our 23+ years of experience teaching the Red Cross "Learn to Swim" program has proven to be successful and beneficial. Many of our students have achieved the discipline and skills necessary to achieve higher goals.
