Grow your garden bigger and better with Kelp Meal

At Mendham Garden Center, we fi nd that more and more people are
amending their garden soil with composted materials. Adding compost
provides many benefi ts. But, if over applied, compost has the potential to
cause an imbalance in soil nutrients. Composts are typically high in certain
nutrients which have the potential to limit availability of other nutrients.
Micronutrients, although utilized in relatively small quantities, are important
in garden production. These micronutrients are not typically supplied in
adequate amounts by seemingly "complete" traditional or organic fertilizer.
After a few years of adding compost, a reduction in garden production is
many times observed. Lack of micronutrient availability in an otherwise
fertile situation may be the cause. Application of any fertilizer that includes
potassium and phosphorous has the potential to further increase an
imbalance in available macro and micro nutrients.
Although soil testing is the only sure way of determining nutrient
availability, the application of Kelp Meal (derived from sea kelp) can be the
missing link in an eff ective organic or traditional fertility program. Tilling
in Kelp Meal at the start of the season, coupled with side dressing plants
again mid-season, supplies many of the micronutrients required by plants
without causing any signifi cant impact on availability of other nutrients. We're
conveniently located on Route 31N, near the Old Allerton Road intersection.
