As we enter the Spring and Summer
season, we would like to take a moment
to remind the residents of Clinton
Township to remain alert for possible
scams, which have continued to cost
our citizens their hard-earned money.
Most recently, an elderly resident was a
victim of the "Grandparents Bail Scam,"
wherein she received a telephone call from someone
claiming to be her grandchild asking for bail money. The
victim made arrangements with the scammers to have cash picked up by a
courier at her home. Unfortunately the scam was not discovered until after the
money was long gone.
We need your help to share this information with vulnerable
residents, who may not have access to or feel comfortable utilizing social
media and the internet and therefore are not aware of the public service
announcements on our social media platforms. Please make family, friends
and neighbors aware of these scams. If you, or anyone you know, receives a
telephone call from someone claiming to be a family member asking for bail
money, please be aware it is most likely a scam. Due to bail reform laws, cash
bail no longer exists. If you are unsure, call the Clinton Township Police, we
will help you determine if the call is legitimate or a scam.
The "Grandparents Bail Scam" is just one of many scams out
there. Online fraud and other cybercrimes are still a serious issue
for Clinton Township residents and our Department. Any resident who
believes they have been a victim of any fraud or scam should call the Clinton
Township Police to make a report.
