A helpful free tool to organize your child's acceptance letters and financial award offers can be found on the U.S. Department of Education site and is called The Financial Aid Shopping Sheet. If you want to ask your top choice school to reconsider their offer, remember it's not a negotiation, it is a conversation. If you are appealing the Merit Aid offer, have the student (not the parent) contact the college's office of admissions and be prepared to offer reasons why you deserve more (such as updated grades or information that wasn't previously submitted on the application). A parent can appeal the Need Based offer, by presenting changes in your financial circumstance (loss of job, change in family), to the financial aid office. Your case may be forwarded to a committee and Professional Judgement (PJ) may be used to adjust your offer. The financial counselors at each school welcome phone calls and discussions to help with financing. All parents with college bound children should begin sorting through colleges and understanding the Estimated Family Contribution (EFC) which will soon be replaced by the Student Aid Index. A free tool can be found at www.ShoppingSheet.com. During this process, you will also learn a school's Cost of Attendance (COA). Keep in mind, the actual COA will also depend on merit aid received from the college, mostly based on a student's GPA (pre-Covid, most colleges typically used a test score and GPA). I would never take a school off a student's college list because of the estimate, but it's never too early to begin conversations about money during the process. Z i n n i a ' s F a V O r i t e b a n a n a F r i t t e r s A family favorite use for ripe bananas, we make these high protein, sugar free, gluten free, and dairy free banana fritters to enjoy as a family or save extras for a quick breakfast to reheat on the go. Makes 4-6 servings. Ingredients: • 2 ripe bananas • 2 eggs, lightly scrambled • 1/2 cup buckwheat flour • 1 pinch of salt • 1/8 tsp vanilla extract • 1 pinch cinnamon • 2 Tbsp Coconut oil 1. Mash bananas, and combine with scrambled egg, flour, salt, vanilla, and cinnamon. 2. Melt 1 tsp coconut oil to coat a skillet over medium heat 3. Spoon batter to pan about 1/4 cup each 4. Flip after two minutes and continue cooking until lightly browned 5. Melt coconut oil and repeat with remaining batter Enjoy these banana fritters simply or get creative and add 1/2 cup crushed nuts, some frozen blueberries, or raisins to the batter.
