Spring season represents new beginnings, re-growth and new phases. Let it be the same for you. If you don't currently have an exercise program or even if you do, exercising outdoors is fun and beneficial. Whether you walk with a neighbor, friend, pushing your baby in a stroller or walking your dog, great benefits will follow. Walking increases your heart rate which helps build stamina over time to enhance your cardiovascular health, working several muscles of the legs which increases strength and exercise. It also naturally releases endorphins which can have a positive affect on your mental health by promoting happy thoughts and improving mood. What better way to enjoy nature at its best and improve your health and well being at the same time. Other great activities that can be enjoyed outdoors are hiking, swimming, running and cycling. If you are a new beginner to exercise it is important that you consult with your doctors beforehand to let them know your plans to begin an exercise program so they may give you some guidance. Additional factors to consider when partaking in outdoor activities are hydration, weather appropriate clothing and safety. Make sure you stay well hydrated before, during and after your exercise to maintain fluid loss through perspiration. If the day is a little brisk, dressing in layers will allow you to feel comfortable when the day starts off chilly but then warms up. Don't forget the sun block! Even though the day may not be as hot as a summer day would be, the sun is still strong and you need to prepare for it. Very importantly, exercise in areas that are free of any hazards like hanging wires and overly wooded areas, and take precautions if exercising on busy streets or highways. It's a good idea to wear reflective clothing, sneakers and bring your cell phone with you in case of emergencies especially if you're alone. So let this beautiful season motivate you to get out there and get some physical activity. You will be glad you did–your body will thank you!! The Musconetcong Watercolor Group, led by professional illustrator, Doris Ettlinger, has been meeting weekly since 2007. The fruits of their labor are now on exhibit at the Tewksbury Library, a charming Victorian house in Oldwick. For more information on how to incorporate daily exercise into your lifestyle, stop by one of our Hunterdon Health and Wellness Centers to speak to one of our fitness professionals. Working in a 19th century gristmill overlooking the Musconetcong River near Hampton - Ettlinger's home and studio - the twelve artists experiment with new techniques and hone their brushwork. Their love of nature is reflected in idyllic landscapes and exuberant florals. According to Ettlinger, "Watercolor requires careful thought before wetting the brush, courage when applying the paint, and restraint from fussing over it afterwards."
