But good things began to happen when I saw the sign for Flu Shots outside Occupational Therapy and, with no waiting and no fee (a perk for volunteers) I got my flu shot. It didn't hurt at all. Then the cafeteria had my favorite grilled cheese on whole grain toast for lunch. Next, a florist delivered half a dozen red roses in a lovely case to "Ruth – Tuesday Volunteer – HMC" Needless to say that positively made my day. Will I ever find out who sent them? I drove home before the threatened severe storms and possible tornado which never did take place. How much better can a day get? It's so easy to complain about life's tribulations. But, more and more I am finding pleasure and contentment with ordinary routines. I enjoy my morning walkabout and the mug of hot hazelnut-flavored coffee afterwards. Sitting on the breezeway is the best way to appreciate living in Hunterdon County. Surrounded by trees and greens is truly a blessing. I can sit on the patio in the late afternoon sun and listen to the brook and wonder if there could be any more satisfying place to be. When I drive through the more populated areas to the East I remember my childhood in Westfield. It is a beautiful town, for sure, but it's not Clinton Township. (Our home was so close to the one next door the young guy who lived there and I would open our upstairs windows and have conversations with each other.) Amazing… it never seemed to be so close. I am thankful for the seasons. Well, not Winter especially! But the fact that there are four seasons and just as I'm getting tired of one, the next one arrives. Indian Corn and pumpkins in the Fall, Christmas decorations and hot casseroles in Winter, Forsythia and no jacket weather in Spring and Jersey corn and tomatoes and growing herbs on the patio in Summer. Do folks in Florida know what they're missing? I get a kick out of watching the neighbors' kids grow from toddlers to high schoolers... my neighbors' phone calls during a power outage to make sure I'm OK... my next door neighbor who digs out my mailbox after a heavy snowstorm... even the newspaper delivery lady (Anna) who leaves my Courier News right next to the garage door in bad weather. My friends, my family, my health... and finally, I give thanks to Julie Flynn, our Newsletter Editor, who has become like a second daughter to me. Her daily presence is such a comfort and her ability to successfully publish what used to be Fred's pride and joy pleases me beyond belief. I am very happy to report that Thanksgiving 2012 is a winner!
