"It's Never Too Late"
If anyone had told me I would be dating after more than 80 years
on this earth and two husbands, I would have dismissed the idea
with a hearty laugh. I've been married for a total of 62 years and
was pretty sure my interactions with the opposite sex were history.
But, as is often the case, I was wrong.
My first encounter was with a fine looking gentleman at the pro-
duce counter at King's. We were touching and sniffing cantaloupes
together and exchanged a few pleasantries. As luck would have
i t , we met again several weeks later and after a
lengthy discussion about the merits
of asparagus (Be still my heart!)
we decided to share coffee and
croissants at Starbucks. Un-
fortunately, the more we shared
the more I knew that, alas, he
was not going to be part
of my destiny.
Then I met a fella (85
if he was a day) while
volunteering at the
Medical Center.
That affair of
the heart s l o w l y
progressed to
dinner at the
Clinton House.
Turns out he was
looking for someone
to "take care of him"
in the future. I'd been there, done
that – ENOUGH ALREADY. So it was a
very short lived relationship.
Finally (well, at least so far) I met the di-
vorced father of a young friend. We had a
wonderful, comfortable, laugh-a-lot lun-
cheon date and I hope more will follow
soon. Time isn't on my side.
In case you are in the market for an older dude, there are places
to meet widowers/divorcees. There is always volunteering...
anywhere elderly gentlemen frequent. There are classes at the
Division on Aging, but I suggest "Auto Mechanics" or "Fly Fishing"
rather than "Knitting" or 'Quilting". They tell me you can attend
Square Dancing classes and maybe do-si-do with an interesting
partner or two.
My criteria for a date is simple: Can he drive at night and cut his
own meat? As my age goes up, my standards go down.
It's nice to go out to dinner with a male companion or to share
a theatre trip to the city or even a picnic at Round Valley. That
would more than satisfy my needs. Being alone, however, is not
the same as being lonely. I am coping as a widow remarkably
well, doing things "My Way" for the first time in more than half
a century. If my Prince Charming evades me, I'll settle for a
companionable frog.
NOW is a GREAT TIME to
put your house on the market!
