" While we can't be together, engaged in group activities in the way we used to, we're discovering new, virtual ways to interact as a community, that have their own unique rewards. Raritan Valley Habitat Youth, a group of student service clubs across Somerset and Hunterdon county high schools, successfully hosted their first virtual fundraising event, Shelter Strong, a week of fitness from April 19 to April 25. The event was designed to help individuals and families stay physically fit and build virtual camaraderie, all while supporting the Raritan Valley Habitat for Humanity (RV Habitat) mission of providing affordable home ownership opportunities to create strength, stability and self-reliance for local families. Shelter Strong replaced Habitat Youth's annual 5K Rainbow Run event previously scheduled for April 19. The students worked quickly to develop this new, virtual event to help the community feel better, get healthier and spend their days at home in a positive way. As one student shared, "We thought structure, exercise and community were all things that could improve their spirits, well-being and overall health. We thought of the event as a way to help Raritan Valley Habitat while also helping the community." Shelter Strong participants were given a private Facebook group, a schedule of fitness ideas for the week and exclusive live stream classes from area fitness providers. People experimented with new activities by taking live stream classes like kickboxing, karate, chair yoga, CrossFit and Zumba to name a few. And participants influenced each other, sharing fun photos and videos of their own unique ways of being active like getting on the trampoline with their kids or even juggling! As one participant shared "I hadn't expected to enjoy the community aspect of it as much as I did. It was fun to see what others were up to and I enjoyed the lightheartedness of some of the posts." Participants could chose which activities they wanted to do and move as little or as much as they wanted during the week. They just needed to follow social distancing directives if outside. Nearly 50 people joined the event and raised $2,000 for RV Habitat. The event was also successful in that people learned new things and became more connected with others. In fact, the group is still going and people are still posting and sharing with each other, despite the formal event being over! Habitat Youth would like to thank their fitness partners for providing fun and challenging workouts for the event: Chimney Rock CrossFit (Bridgewater), Gold's Gym of Bridgewater, Yoga Loka (Frenchtown), Zumba teachers Ana Correia Norton and Cathy Yanes, Yoga teacher Laura Kenyon, Impact Martial Arts (Clinton) and Tatyana's Fitness (Somerville). You can still help brighten the futures of families in the local community by shopping at the RV Habitat ReStore online. The RV Habitat ReStore sells new and gently used household items to benefit the mission of RV Habitat. The ReStore, despite being closed, is still selling items on their Ebay page at www.ebay.com/str/Raritan-Valley-ReStore. The ReStore has also been hosting live online auctions every Friday afternoon from 1:00 to 3:00 on their Facebook page www.facebook.com/RVHFH.ReStore/. Simply go to their Facebook page each week before Friday to sign up for that week's auction event. RV Habitat couldn't give local families a safe place to live and thrive without the support of our local community. To make a donation, please visit www.rvhabitat.org.
