In their words, "Just because we can't gather, DOES NOT mean we can't race!" The Main Street Marathon team, a group that produces and directs numerous community health and fitness charitable events including the Main Street Half Marathon of Hunterdon, SantaCon 8k, the Beautiful Beast, Muscle-Up for Art, the SonRise 5k and more have launched a free Virtual Race Series to support the community members and their efforts to maintain physical activity and healthy lifestyle, while practicing safe social distancing. Participants can play along and "race" from anywhere in the world by submitting their self-recorded distance and time when out walking, running or "racing"! Submissions will update a live leaderboard with rankings based on Age-Graded Percentages (comparing to the world record for a given age and gender), and allowing participants to filter results by individual, distance or club! Compete as an individual... as a team... and in any distance you'd like! For now, this is honor code... but should your results get called into question... well, the proof is in the ... garmin (or your tracker of choice)! To play along or find more details please visit: www.MainStreetMarathon. com/virtual. i s y o u r g A r A g e D o o r s A f e ? by Anne Thornton, President, MSI Plumbing & Remodeling According to garage door safety experts, more than 10,000 people per year are injured by garage doors. Fingers get caught and pinched, doors fall for whatever reason, people (particularly children) try and race to get through the door opening while it is closing and are injured, the springs cause injuries, people get lacerations from hardware, tracks or the garage door window glass. Teach your children that garage doors are not toys. And, remember, garage doors need to be maintained and checked regularly for safe operation. Here's a list of things to look for and do to make sure your garage door is safe for your family and your pets: • Put it into manual mode and lift it: it should glide smoothly and stay open on its own three feet from the ground. If not, have a garage door professional counterbalance it. • Put a pet or child-size object on the ground (a small cardboard box or lightweight plastic laundry hamper, for example) and close the door. It should pop up as soon as it meets the obstacle. If not, call a professional. • Always make sure the garage door is completely closed before driving away. • Keep people clear of the garage-door opening while door is moving. • Do not allow children to play with door or opener, including the wall control and/ or remote. • Do not operate a door that has jammed or has a broken spring. • Do not install an opener on an improperly balanced garage door, as it may cause severe injury. • Periodically, visually check your door springs and hardware. • Periodically, oil door rollers, bearings and hinges. The Hunterdon Harmonizers, an a cappella singing group, will offer free singing lessons on Tuesday evenings in Flemington beginning April 28. Called "Ready, Set, Sing" this series of six lessons is open to individuals of high school age and beyond. The program begins at 7:30 p.m. and will be held at the Stangl Pottery Museum, 2 Stangl Road, Flemington. "It is a great opportunity to learn," said Jim Verhalen, vice president of membership. "The program will motivate singers to sing better and offer information about the benefits of singing and specific training exercises to enhance vocal production", he added. Participants will also gain confidence singing in any venue "and we'll all learn a new song in four-part a cappella harmony." Following each class, participants may remain for a portion of the Harmonizers regular rehearsals to enjoy the warm camaraderie the Harmonizers offer as they rehearse on a weekly basis. Numerous graduates of past free singing programs have joined the Harmonizers and are now successful barbershop performers. With its mission to connect people and enrich lives through singing, the Harmonizers actively perform in community and private events throughout Central New Jersey and neighboring Pennsylvania, and welcome individuals of all ages who share a love of music and service. For more and updated information, visit the Hunterdon Harmonizers website at: www. NJHarmonizers.org, or call: 908.806.6683.
