W a r m e r W e at h e r , W at e r W a r n i n g s Summer is on its way, bringing hot, hazy, humid weather to our area. As temperatures creep higher, families and their children are sure to enjoy recreational activities in and around water. While certainly entertaining and refreshing, water activities can also be dangerous. At this time of year, we would like to remind you of how important it is to be careful and to re-inspect your home and your recreational vehicles to ensure the safest environment. Some statistics to review: n According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, drowning is the second leading cause of injury-related death among children under the age of 15; children between the ages of 1 and 4 drown most commonly in the home or backyard. n The New Jersey Division of Consumer Affairs website states that "According to a national study of drowning related accidents involving children, a parent or caregiver claimed to be supervising the child in nearly 9 out of 10 child drowning related deaths." n Per the U.S. Coast Guard, Office of Auxiliary and Boating Safety, there were 119 accidents involving recreational boating, resulting in 8 fatalities, with 51 people injured in New Jersey in the year 2011. In a New Jersey Department of Health and Senior Services, Center for Health Statistics publication, Health Data Fact Sheet 2008, the latest statistics of this type available, the following was stated: n Between 1990 and 2005, over 800 people died of water-related injuries in New Jersey in the months of May through September. n The vast majority of water-related injury deaths are due to drowning, but 13 % are injuries involving watercraft or diving or jumping into water. n Between 1997 and 2006, there were 1,700 hospitalizations for waterrelated injuries in the summer in New Jersey (exclusive of emergency department visits). n In the summers of 2004-2006, there were nearly 2,200 hospital emergency department visits for water-related injuries. Water parks can also present a dangerous situation as many now offer wave pools. It is best to find out as much about the reputation of the park prior to your visit. In addition to the overall condition of the park and its cleanliness, determine whether or not the park employs certified lifeguards. Our best wishes for a summer season of fun and good health and a gentle reminder to be aware of the dangers of water; enjoy it but respect it. www.rotololawfirm.com Victor A.
