Flat feet, or excessive pronation, is when somebody's feet look flat or that when they walk, their feet can flatten out. This excessive motion is called pronation. Obviously, we don't want to have too much pronation. When your feet do flatten out too much they affect the rest of your body. It can cause your knees to rotate in and your hips to rotate out. This can cause people to have lower back pain and knee pain which comes from their feet. So when your feet are out of alignment it can cause other problems in your body. Having flat feet can cause your feet to change as you get older. Without the proper support, bones in your feet can change and shift causing bunions, hammertoes, painful feet. People can also develop arthritis in their feet. A very common problem called plantar fasciitis, which is an inflammation of the ligament on the bottom of your feet can be aggravated by excessive pronation or flat feet. It's very important to pay attention to your feet and have them examined by a podiatrist who can help stop your feet from getting worse. One of the best things to help with excessive pronation or flat feet is to get into a pair of custom arch supports called orthotics. Yes, you can attempt to try to help yourself by getting a pair of Dr. Scholl's over-the-counter but they are not very good. It's really important to go see a podiatrist and get evaluated by a medical specialist who could provide you with the best care. Most insurances will cover for orthotics.
