Plants require 16 nutrients (elements) – the soil supplies 13 – air and water supply the other three. Nutrients become less available when proper soil pH is not maintained. Nutrients also become less available when nutrient levels are not adequately maintained. When nutrients are in short supply, the soil will hold the nutrients it needs before nutrients are available to the plant. Soil compaction and/or lack of adequate soil moisture will also affect nutrient availability. As nutrients become less available, plants not only become less productive but also become more susceptible to insect and disease damage. Excess nutrients, applied when not required, are not only costly but add to the risk of runoff and pollution. A soil test provides the information necessary to apply the correct amount of lime and fertilizer. In the long run, soil-testing becomes productive, environmentally friendly and cost effective.
