RAPTOR TRUST & LORD STIRLING HIKE VAN TRIP: Saturday, January 11 (snow date January 18), 8:30 am to 1:30 pm at the Arboretum. Ages: adults. Cost: $33. Meet Senior Park Naturalist Laura Bush at the Arboretum where we will take a County van to Lord Stirling Park in Somerset County. We will take a winter hike there for about an hour (about two miles of hiking required). Then we will visit the Raptor Trust, a bird rehabilitation facility in Millington that has 50 non-releasable birds of prey on display. At the Raptor Trust, we will meet a live bird and enjoy a PowerPoint entitled Sharing the World with Raptors. We will then have time to explore the display birds on our own. Dress to be outside. Feel free to bring lunch/snacks to enjoy in the van on the way home. LEARN ABOUT LICHENS! Wednesday, January 15 (snow date January 22), 7:00 pm to 8:30 pm at the Arboretum. Ages: 12 through adult. Cost: $3. Are they plants? Are they fungi? No, they're both! Lichens are everywhere you look, and they are as fascinating as they are ubiquitous. Join lichenologist Dennis Waters to learn about these remarkable botanical partnerships—how they work and how they have grown to be so dependent on each other. We will enjoy a slideshow, and then look at some local samples. Bring along lichens you have found to have them identified. WOODPECKERS OF NEW JERSEY: Monday, January 27, 7:00 pm to 8:00 pm at the Arboretum. Ages: 8 through adult. Cost: $3. Woodpeckers have a variety of adaptations that make them great at pecking wood! They have a tongue that is so long that they must store it behind their skull when it is not in use. They have spongy tissue in their skull to absorb shock. Their feet have two toes pointed backwards to help them grip vertically on trees. Through the use of a PowerPoint and our taxidermied collection of the seven New Jersey woodpeckers, we will learn all about these unique birds. TOT WALKS: Time: 9:30 am to 10:30 am at Echo Hill. Ages: 2 to 3 with adult. Cost: Each walk $3 per child; accompanying adult attends for free. Join Senior Park Naturalist Laura Bush on these early adventures to discover nature at your local park! Leave the strollers behind as we take a walk outside to see plants and animals around us. We will use our senses to focus on each theme. Each one-hour program will include a walk and an indoor time of a story and craft. We offer three walks of the same theme in a row; please select Session A, B, or C.
