There are mental benefits as well. Weight training can be relaxing and fun! That is, at least when it goes according to plan. Strategizing the best way to implement weight training can seem very confusing for a beginner. One of the most frequent questions new lifters may ask is, "How often should I be doing this?" For a beginner in good health (assuming no injuries or other contraindications) the most effective strategy is about three days per week, ideally every other day if possible. This allows for a bit of recovery time between workouts, yet still has enough frequency for the body to adapt to the workload. Specific exercises will vary from person to person, but in general a full body workout using both pushing and pulling movements is the most effective early on. This helps train the body as a cohesive unit and ensures proper volume for a strong and balanced physique. This is not to say one should only be active three days a week, of course! Cardio and stretching can and should still be done on "off" days. As the beginner grows more experienced and can safely handle more volume or desires more of a challenge, he or she can certainly add more sessions a week, up to four or five. Keeping at least one off-day for recovery is still recommended. Bring this article in with you to one of our Wellness Center locations and enjoy a one day complimentary guest pass on us! (Please note: This offer is limited to one visit per guest, per month). h u n t e r D o n h e a l t h a n D w e l l n e s s c e n t e r l o c a t I o n s : Whitehouse Station: 537 Route 22 East, Whitehouse Station, NJ 08889 Clinton: 1738 Route 31 North, Clinton, NJ 08809 Lambertville: 333 North Main Street, Lambertville, NJ 08530 Thank you to all who participated in our Annual Pasta Dinner fundraiser!
